MACRAE WYLDE

Medium: Sculpture

I build sculpture, objects that occupy space. Sculpture can be seen from all sides, has a mass and a material. It has a surface that light moves across. I have always been drawn to form. When asked why I build a piece I am often hard pressed to give a rational explanation. It goes beyond enjoying the process of fabrication. I am drawn to pieces that ask questions. What does it mean, why is it there, what is it made of, does it do anything? I am drawn to simple forms. I build sculpture out of some personal need, some irrational sense that I can make something interesting. I like how lines come together and curves intersect. I like how a piece occupies and activates the space around it. I like how a simple shape can look like it is moving or can have the sense of weight. I like seeing through a piece to something else. In my ideal world I would build pieces in groups. They would be installed together to be seen as one big piece. The space around each one as important as the structure. To me sculpture is both a thing unto itself and a departure point for contemplation.
